Today, I’m taking you far beyond the sunny streets of Orange County to a place rich in history, mystery, and legend—Romania, my homeland. As much as I love helping people find homes here in California, I’m equally excited to introduce you to a home of a very different kind: Bran Castle, famously linked to the Dracula myth. Whether you’re a fan of history, spooky stories, or just curious about Romanian culture, this video will take you on a journey through one of the most iconic landmarks in Europe. Let’s dive into the real story behind Dracula, and what makes Bran Castle so fascinating!
Here are some cool facts about Bran Castle’s history and how it connects to the Dracula myth, all from a Romanian perspective:
Bran Castle: A Historical Fortress
Built for Strategic Defense: Bran Castle was originally constructed in 1388 as a fortress to defend against invasions from the Ottoman Empire. Its strategic location in the Carpathian Mountains made it ideal for watching over important trade routes between Transylvania and Wallachia.
Royal Residence: Bran Castle wasn’t always linked to vampires or horror. It was actually a royal residence for Queen Marie of Romania in the early 20th century. She fell in love with the castle, renovating it and turning it into her summer home. You can still visit her beautifully decorated rooms today.
Not Vlad the Impaler’s Castle: While it’s widely marketed as “Dracula’s Castle,” there is little evidence that Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Țepeș), the real-life inspiration for Dracula, ever lived or stayed there. Vlad was a ruler of Wallachia and may have passed by the castle, but his connections to Bran Castle are more myth than fact.
Museum Today: Bran Castle is now a museum open to visitors, showcasing not only the medieval architecture but also Romanian art and furniture collected by Queen Marie. It’s one of Romania's top tourist destinations.
The Dracula Myth
Bram Stoker’s Dracula: The myth of Dracula was popularized by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, where Count Dracula is portrayed as a vampire from Transylvania. However, Stoker never visited Romania. He crafted the character based on research and folklore, mixing in some historical facts about Vlad the Impaler, who ruled in the 15th century.
Vlad the Impaler’s Brutal Reputation: Vlad Țepeș earned his nickname due to his method of punishing enemies—impalement. He was notorious for his cruelty but also respected for defending his people from Ottoman invasions. Romanian history views him as a strict, patriotic leader rather than a bloodthirsty villain.
Romanian Vampire Folklore: Romanian folklore includes legends about vampires, or Strigoi, long before Dracula. Strigoi are undead spirits who rise from the grave to haunt the living. This folklore might have inspired Stoker, but in Romania, the story of Dracula is not as deeply rooted in our cultural identity as many believe.
Bran Castle’s Modern Connection to Dracula: Even though Bran Castle isn’t directly tied to the real Dracula, it became associated with the myth due to its eerie, medieval appearance and its location in Transylvania, a region famous for its dark forests and ancient history. It’s become a focal point for vampire tourism.
By blending history with myth, Bran Castle stands as both a symbol of Romania’s rich medieval heritage and its fascinating role in pop culture. The castle attracts thousands of visitors each year who come for its beauty, but many stay for the intrigue of Dracula’s legend.

Bran Castle is a perfect example of how history, myth, and culture can create a lasting impression on the world—much like the unique homes I help my clients find in California.
